1,517 potential hematopoietic stem cell donors

1,517 people registered as potential donors in the bank’s branches and four of them have already given other people a chance for a new life.

For more than 3 years now, the DKMS Foundation and the Santander Bank Polska Foundation have been fighting hand in hand against haematological malignancies. Thanks to the involvement of  volunteers from the bank and the financial support of the Foundation, the registration of new hematopoietic stem cell donors  has been possible.

Every hour one person in Poland is diagnosed with leukaemia. The disease occurs in people from all age groups. The good thing is, however, that everyone can help. For many people, hematopoietic cell transplantation from donor’s bone marrow or blood is the only chance to live. Unfortunately, the probability of finding a suitable donor ranges from 1:20 000 to as much as 1 to a few million. As a result, one in five patients in Poland still cannot find their ‘genetic twin’. That’s why it is so important to keep the largest possible database of donors. The mission of helping  the patients who need transplantation can be pursued thanks to the support of socially responsible companies, such as Santander Bank Polska.

The Santander Bank Polska Foundation has provided financial assistance to the DKMS Foundation since 2015, by covering the costs of recruiting new candidates for donors. In 2018, thanks to the donation 253 new persons were registered.
