Patronage over cultural and sports events
For many years now, culture and education have been the main priorities of the bank’s sponsorship initiatives. The bank is focused on long-term projects, important for communities, which are remembered for long because of exceptional aesthetic experience, emotions or knowledge acquired during such events. We are particularly committed to initiatives that facilitate access to culture and engage people at risk of being excluded from this domain of life.
Santander Orchestra
The originators of the Santander Orchestra project are Santander Bank Polska and MyWay Foundation, with the support of Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Centre. The Santander Orchestra project allows young artists from all over Poland to perfect their skills under the direction of outstanding conductors and tutors and music professors who are recognised in Poland and abroad.
Since 2015, young musicians have performed under the baton of Krzysztof Penderecki, John Axelrod and Jerzy Maksymiuk, José Maria Florêncio, playing in some of the most prestigious and modern concert halls in Poland, including the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin or the seat of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. On a special invitation from Mrs. Elżbieta Penderecka, the orchestra performed during the 20th Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Lusławice and in Warsaw.
In 2016, the Santander Orchestra recorded their first album with the compositions of Frederic Chopin and Antonín Dvořák. The concert promoting the album was performed in the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and is currently available on a CD and on the most popular digital music platforms, such as Spotify.

We support the education of Polish musicians in Reina Sofía School of Music
The bank’s cooperation with the Albéniz Foundation since 2013, has allowed young Polish musicians to study in the famous Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid.
In 2017, the cooperation agreement was extended for the next two years, and therefore, more Polish students will be able to master their skills under the supervision of famous tutors in one of the best music schools worldwide. Currently, we have two violonists studying at the school: Weronika Dziadek and Roxana Wiśniewska.
Reina Sofía School of Music belongs to the Albéniz Foundation, established by Paloma O’Shea Artiñano. The school became a famous centre of musical excellence. Its graduates join the most prestigious orchestras in the world, pursuit careers as solo musicians and are award winners in international competitions.
Polish students who have been granted scholarships by the Reina Sofía School of Music since 2013 are: Maciej Strzelecki, Anna Chłopeniuk, Anna Paliwoda, Marta Wasilewicz, Roxana Wiśniewska and Weronika Dziadek.
The Reina Sofia School of Music is an international educational institution for young musicians. The school was founded in Madrid in 1991 and from the very beginning was under the special guardianship of Her Majesty Queen Sofia. Every year the school offers instruction to 150 students from ca. 30 countries, and the best professors and renowned artists are invited to conduct masterclass courses. One of the main principles of the school is a system of scholarships granted to talented musicians. Thanks to Santander Bank Polska’s partnership with the Albéniz Foundation, aimed at promoting young talent, Polish students admitted to Reina Sofia are granted scholarships and can pursue this remarkable education.
Cranach at the National Museum in Wrocław
The bank was a patron of the exhibition called “Fashion for Cranach” held by the National Museum in Wrocław between 31 October and 30 December 2017. The exhibition included art works of the Reformation period in Wrocław and the Silesia to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the year Martin Luther made his 95 Theses known to the world in Wittenberg.
Photography by Arkadiusz Podstawka
The paintings included such masterpieces of Lucas Cranach the Elder as, the famous “Madonna Under the Fir Tree”, “Salome with the Head of John the Baptist”, “Adam and Eve” or “The Unmatched Couple”. Among the Silesian paintings inspired by the works of the Cranachs, visitors could admire the Apocalyptic Madonna from the vestry of the Wrocław Cathedral shown in to the public for the first time, and two paintings from the church in Swojczyce, dating back to the late medieval and early modern times. One of the highlights were drawings from the 16th century which had not been exhibited before – probably drafts of epitaph paintings and several dozens of portraits of the residents of Wrocław drawn in crayon.
“»Fashion for Cranach« is a tribute to this remarkable German painter, showing his enormous impact on his contemporaries and later artists. It is also a type of post scriptum to our earlier project, the »Santander Collection« from 2013. The National Museum in Wrocław holding the exhibition was visited by more than 80,000 people, achieving one of the record attendances in three decades. We are happy to be able to support such inspiring events, that allow us to break away, even if only for a moment, from the everyday”
The exhibition was held in the main building of the National Museum in Wrocław and the presented works were borrowed from the National Museum in Warsaw, museums in Budapest and Berlin.

The teams competed in three tournaments forming the preliminary round in a round-robin format, where every team plays every other team. Two tournaments played in September and October in Radom selected the eight best teams.
The final, Cup Tournament was held in November in Warsaw. The Polish Champion 2017 cup went to Balian Wielkopolska Chrzypsko Pniewy, who in the finals won with the Flying Wings Rzeszów 44:42. Third place was awarded to the Four Kings from Warsaw.
This event was accompanied by a social campaign “You only see the wheelchair”, which was meant to make people aware that a disability need not be an obstacle to being successful in sports.
Barrier-free cinema
We often engage in cultural initiatives, especially if they fit into the “barrier-free” category.
Thanks to our partnership with the Katarynka Foundation we became the patron of an event, during which people visiting the New Horizons Cinema in Wrocław between 10 September and 31 December 2017 could watch movies with subtitles for the deaf and audio descriptions.
The ”Barrier-Free Cinema” event included the screening of the film, “Citizen” (Obywatel) and a meeting with a special guest, an outstanding actor and director, Jerzy Stuhr. The audience also had a chance to see the movies: “Spoor” (Pokot), “Loving Vincent” (Twój Vincent) and the Swedish film “A Man Called Ove”. The screenings attracted strong interest of the public. Audio description was available in headphones for those who needed it. Deaf viewers had subtitles and a sign language translator at their disposal.
The underlying assumption of the “Barrier-free Cinema” was to integrate people without disabilities with people having impairments, and young people with senior citizens. Additionally, the authors of the project promote the achievements of Polish cinematography and the latest world cinema among people with vision and hearing impairments. They also offer a film website called Adapter.pl, where you can watch films with audio descriptions and subtitles without the need to register or pay any fees.

Integration fencing events in schools
Photography by Łukasz Fijałkowski
In 2017, we continued our collaboration with the Academy for Integration Foundation supporting the organisation of the educational fencing events – Passion, Integration and Security for children and youth in schools in Poland.
What does it mean to be disabled? Can you be an outstanding athlete in a wheelchair? Can someone without hands still drive a car” These are only some of the questions asked by children during these meetings.
These events fulfil several objectives. Paralympics, who are full of passion and socially active, inspire, entertain and teach how to understand people with disabilities, and at the same time encourage young people to take a fresh look at the disabled without the socially imposed and reinforced stereotypes. These meetings are also an opportunity to address other important issues, such as safety, empathy, integration and believing in yourself.
